Soda

I haven't had a Coke in 3 days. Pray for me. It's not that I decided to quit - it's just that I recognize soda isn't the best choice in beverages and it would be great if my body didn't go into fits each day at 2 o'clock in response to a need for caffeine.

And it's not just the caffeine I love. It's the taste. And the fact that it's a little reward for how hard I've worked thus far in the day. And the fact that by 2 o'clock I've been up for 9 hours and my body starts to yearn for more energy.

But it's the new year, which means time to negotiate resolutions. And since I'm getting Wii Fit, I'm trying to get a wee bit healthy too. Fruit gushers and Little Debbie brownies have been replaced with celery and apples for after school snacks. And hopefully water has replaced my beloved Coca Cola. But we're only 3 days out, and I never promised you anything.

  1. I feel your pain! I am a recovering Coke addict. As in Coca Cola, the sweet nectar of the gods. I was up to about 6 cans a day before I quit cold turkey. The last time I had a Coke was 5/25/06, the day my daughter was born. Like you, I knew it wasn't good for me, and even though I loved it SO MUCH, I stopped. No diet Coke either, that stuff is just nasty. It was very difficult, but if a Coke worshiper like me can do it, so can you! In the spirit of full disclosure, I must tell you that I now drink buckets of diet Mt. Dew each day. But hey,no sugar! You know what they say, always replace one vice with another one! Wait, they do say that, don't they?

  2. I'm with you! I used to be addicted to Diet Coke. Not just for the caffeine, but because I loved the feel of the carbonation going down! Unfortunately, I had to have mine in the form of a fountain drink (no canned or bottled for me!), and it had to be in a to go cup with a lid and a straw! What you get in a restaurant glass just wasn't the same. I would spend a minimum of $10 a day on fountain drinks, but I loved them! Last year I realized that not only was I wasting a TON of money on fountain drinks, I was harming my body with all of the artificial sweetner. I gave it up cold turkey, and other than the caffeine headaches at the beginning, I was okay! I now drink a lot of water, and I only drink diet coke when I am eating somewhere that serves it in a to go cup with a lid! I'm happy that I gave up the addiction, but I do still enjoy the feel of the carbonation going down!

  3. Once you finish the withdrawals - you won't even want/crave a coke. I promise.

I stopped drinking soda (pop where I am from) about 5 years ago. Surprisingly after about 2 months (maybe three, as I'm sure my memory is sanitizing the pain) I didn't crave it any more. I had been drinking at least a can a day - just to occupy my time and satisfy my sweet tooth.

Now I allow myself a can of soda once every couple of months or so. I'm in control of it - rather than the other way around! Oh and when I crave something fizzy - I turn to sparkling water!! http://singlesolitarythings.blogspot.com/2008/02/it-is-truly-fine-and-elegant-drink.html

Also, when I was in high school - I was addicted to Mountain Dew (at least 3 a day) until my allergy doctor told me to quit. I will say, coming down off my Mt Dew addiction was the hardest thing I ever did - and also why drugs and even smokes never appealed to me - because the withdrawal symptoms from letting go of the caffeine were truly horrible!

The end result - once you don't crave/need caffeine - if you have a headache people will suggest you drink a coke - because THEY are addicted to caffeine. When you are NOT addicted to caffeine - caffeine will cause or increase a headache - not cure it. Just FYI!

  4. Hi! I loved your post, I too gave up something I love as a new year's resolution this year - COFFEE. I know, I'm crazy to do this to myself after so many years enjoying it's comforting aroma and flavor and the warmth of the cup in my usually cold hands. But alas, I vowed to not drink coffee for as long as I could stand it. The day after I posted about this new journey, I am shown in a photo enjoying a small latte from Starbucks. *sigh* . So reading your post here, with the post the day after made me giggle! I love it. I have bookmarked you, I can't wait to read more of your musings!

    thanks!

  5. I too love myself some Coke..I enjoy the taste and the fuzz...living in NY they have these new commercials that have an actor opening a can of soda and pouring it into a cup and than drinking it. To prove that Soda is fattening they replaced the actual soda with fat and it looks like he is drinking globs of fat..disgusting, but I still love my Coke every once in a while.
I feel your pain..but at least its not an alcohol or tobacco addiction.
